The inspiration

The Owambe Collection is infused with West Africa's rich, vibrant and diverse culture.

'Owambe' derives from the Yoruba word òwànbẹ̀ — describing the presence of celebration, of gathering, of a moment that calls for something special. Owambes are usually grandiose affairs, marking occasions like weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, naming ceremonies and funerals. At an owambe, a matching family cloth — 'aso ebi' — is typically worn by the celebrant, their family and close friends. A symbol of unity, solidarity and support. Growing up in London within a Nigerian household, Grace was immersed in West African culture and tradition from an early age. She fell in love with the patterns and embroidered fabrics of the aso ebi worn at owambes — the build-up of excitement that came from having your outfit made, the buzz of the actual event. The impressive array of attire on display. Creative flair and originality fused with traditional style and contemporary influence.

That deep-rooted fascination led to the creation of the By Grace Ambrose Owambe Collection — an attempt to encapsulate the joyous feeling that accompanies marking a milestone or special occasion, in West African style, with all the trimmings.

The collection incorporates the aso ebi concept with weaving techniques taken from West African basket making. It allows you to mark the occasion — choosing your Owambe frame (Luxe, Bella or Chic) and ribbon, woven together to create your own bespoke set of earrings.
